UPTOWN DOWNTOWN NAMED BEST OF 2011 BY ALBANY’S
MUSIC AND THEATRE PRESS

Uptown Downtown, the award-winning musical autobiography by Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer, and recording artist Leslie Uggams, has been named one of the Best of 2011 by New York’s Capital District press. The Albany Times Union, Schenectady Daily Gazette, and Nippertown.com all placed Ms. Uggams’ performance among their top choices of the year.

Paul Lamar of The Daily Gazette praised, “Capital Repertory Theatre’s Uptown Downtown satisfied completely. Leslie Uggams was in the house – and how! There were no musical compromises even after decades in the business. And can she act!”

Steve Barnes of The Times Union acclaimed, “Leslie Uggams in Uptown Downtown, her autobiographical show about her 60 years in Broadway, movies and music, demonstrated just what the overused term ‘old pro’ truly means. She strutted, she wailed, she sang Stormy Weather worthy of a hurricane, and when she swooped along with only a drum kit on Hello, Young Lovers you knew you were watching a consummate veteran still in full command of her talents.”

Uggams has been touring nationally with Uptown Downtown, earning noteworthy accolades including the LA Drama Critics Circle Award, NAACP Theatre Award, IRNE Award, and Broadway World People’s Choice Award. From New York to Boston and Los Angeles, critics have raved, calling Uggams “dazzling,” “indefatigable,” and “delectable.” This tour de force production chronicles her extraordinary career in stories and song. Uggams hopes to bring the show to Broadway in the near future.
